You will need to have the engine running to operate some of the following items, and for others at least the ignition turned on.<\/p>\n<h3>Push button ignition<\/h3>\n<p>In a car with push button ignition rather than a key, it might require two pushes on the button, or one longer push to enable some of the features. To start the engine a manual car often requires that the driver\u2019s foot is on the clutch, and in an automatic car on the brake.<\/p>\n<h2>Driver identification of vehicle features:<\/h2>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-large wp-image-1184\" src=\"https:\/\/www.drivingtests.co.nz\/resources\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/05\/kia-cerato-koup-turbo-dials-595x325.jpg\" alt=\"kia-cerato-koup-turbo-dials\" width=\"550\" height=\"300\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.drivingtests.co.nz\/resources\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/05\/kia-cerato-koup-turbo-dials-595x325.jpg 595w, https:\/\/www.drivingtests.co.nz\/resources\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/05\/kia-cerato-koup-turbo-dials-300x163.jpg 300w, https:\/\/www.drivingtests.co.nz\/resources\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/05\/kia-cerato-koup-turbo-dials.jpg 688w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 550px) 100vw, 550px\" \/><\/p>\n<p>Dashboard instrument cluster lights and dials:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Speedometer\/odometer<\/li>\n<li>Tachometer or rev counter (some modern cars do not have this)<\/li>\n<li>Fuel gauge<\/li>\n<li>Temperature gauge (some vehicles simply have an indicator rather than a gauge)<\/li>\n<li>Warning lights for fuel, oil, engine, water<\/li>\n<li>You might have what\u2019s called a \u2018supervision cluster\u2019 which is a small screen or display that shows multiple other details, such as tyre pressures, trip computer and outside temperature<\/li>\n<li>If you are driving a hybrid you may have other readouts for battery level\u00a0and how much power is being drawn from or charged to the battery<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-full wp-image-1185\" src=\"https:\/\/www.drivingtests.co.nz\/resources\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/05\/steering-wheel-lexus-gs300.jpg\" alt=\"steering-wheel-lexus-gs300\" width=\"550\" height=\"453\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.drivingtests.co.nz\/resources\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/05\/steering-wheel-lexus-gs300.jpg 550w, https:\/\/www.drivingtests.co.nz\/resources\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/05\/steering-wheel-lexus-gs300-300x247.jpg 300w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 550px) 100vw, 550px\" \/><\/p>\n<p>Steering wheel controls (buttons on the steering wheel, plus those on stalks behind the steering wheel):<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Steering wheel<\/li>\n<li>Windscreen wipers<\/li>\n<li>Indicators<\/li>\n<li>Headlights on full beam and dip<\/li>\n<li>Horn<\/li>\n<li>Cruise control<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>Note that some vehicles will have other features on the steering wheel such as mode selections for radio and engine response, plus buttons to answer a Bluetooth connected phone. To activate and deactivate a hydraulic handbrake might require you to have your foot on the brake. Some vehicles will automatically apply the hydraulic handbrake if you put the gearbox in neutral.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-large wp-image-1183\" src=\"https:\/\/www.drivingtests.co.nz\/resources\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/05\/Skoda-Roomster-console-595x396.jpg\" alt=\"Skoda Roomster console\" width=\"550\" height=\"366\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.drivingtests.co.nz\/resources\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/05\/Skoda-Roomster-console-595x396.jpg 595w, https:\/\/www.drivingtests.co.nz\/resources\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/05\/Skoda-Roomster-console-300x200.jpg 300w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 550px) 100vw, 550px\" \/><\/p>\n<p>Console controls:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Ignition (take special care with push button ignitions)<\/li>\n<li>Hazard warning lights<\/li>\n<li>Heating controls<\/li>\n<li>Air conditioning controls (some newer vehicles\u2019 air con is controlled via a touch screen)<\/li>\n<li>Rear demister<\/li>\n<li>Airbag deactivator<\/li>\n<li>Your car might also have controls for hill descent mode, turning any auto stop\/start features on\/off, different modes for driving (e.g. sports mode or snow mode), seat heaters\/coolers, and other buttons to turn on or off various features in the car.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-large wp-image-1188\" src=\"https:\/\/www.drivingtests.co.nz\/resources\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/05\/lexus-gs300-f-sport-2014-seat-controls-595x377.jpg\" alt=\"lexus-gs300-f-sport-2014-seat-controls\" width=\"550\" height=\"348\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.drivingtests.co.nz\/resources\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/05\/lexus-gs300-f-sport-2014-seat-controls-595x377.jpg 595w, https:\/\/www.drivingtests.co.nz\/resources\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/05\/lexus-gs300-f-sport-2014-seat-controls-300x190.jpg 300w, https:\/\/www.drivingtests.co.nz\/resources\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/05\/lexus-gs300-f-sport-2014-seat-controls.jpg 688w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 550px) 100vw, 550px\" \/><\/p>\n<p>Other controls:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Adjust the seat and headrests (take care with electric seats or those with seat memories)<\/li>\n<li>Adjust wing mirrors and rear view mirror \u2013 make sure they are adjusted for maximum visibility<\/li>\n<li>Identify blind spots<\/li>\n<li>Inspect seat belts for wear<\/li>\n<li>Adjust the seat belt for height and tension if required (where the seat belt comes out of the B pillar there\u2019s often the ability to slide it up and down to adjust the height to suit your comfort)<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>Perform the tasks at least twice.<\/p>\n<p>There may be other controls to identify such as the bonnet release, boot release, fuel tank and cover release, charging point on electric vehicles, full lock\/unlock (the button that locks\/unlocks all doors at once), sunroof, and rear blind.
