If you are driving a very old car (perhaps pre-1980s) you may have to give the car some choke if it\u2019s cold<\/li>\n<li>If the car has push button ignition, push the button for long enough for the engine to start<\/li>\n<li>Check the gauges and warning lights as the vehicle goes through its initial post-start check. All warning lights should extinguish, unless there\u2019s one warning the engine is still cold.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>Stopping the engine:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Push the clutch in (manual car) and press the brake pedal<\/li>\n<li>Put the handbrake or park brake on<\/li>\n<li>Put the gearbox in neutral for a manual car or park for an automatic car<\/li>\n<li>Check that only the handbrake\/park brake light is displaying<\/li>\n<li>In a car with a key ignition, turn the key to the off position and remove it from the ignition.<\/li>\n<li>In a car with push button ignition, press the start\/stop button to stop the engine.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>Perform all tasks at least twice.<\/p>\n<p><a title=\"1: Vehicle controls\" href=\"https:\/\/www.drivingtests.co.nz\/resources\/1-vehicle-controls\/\">Previous (1)<\/a> | <a title=\"3: Moving off and stopping\" href=\"https:\/\/www.drivingtests.co.nz\/resources\/3-moving-off-and-stopping\/\">Next (3)<\/a><\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>This lesson is to ensure that you know how to safely start and stop the engine.
