The rule for merging where a lane ends is that you must signal your intention for at least three seconds before performing the manoeuvre. This is covered in clause 3.10(3) and 3.10(4) of the Land Tranport (Road User) Rule 2004.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"600\" height=\"503\" src=\"https:\/\/www.drivingtests.co.nz\/resources\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/09\/on-ramp-or-slip-road-600x503.jpg\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-19622\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.drivingtests.co.nz\/resources\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/09\/on-ramp-or-slip-road-600x503.jpg 600w, https:\/\/www.drivingtests.co.nz\/resources\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/09\/on-ramp-or-slip-road-300x252.jpg 300w, https:\/\/www.drivingtests.co.nz\/resources\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/09\/on-ramp-or-slip-road.jpg 664w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 600px) 100vw, 600px\" \/><figcaption>An on-ramp is designed to allow vehicles to speed up to the same speed as traffic on the motorway or highway. Use the whole distance of the on-ramp and remember to check over your shoulder before you merge. These are often used when exiting a minor road onto a major road. Indicate left.<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">In some situations, two lanes merge but neither lane actually ends. It&#8217;s not legally required for you to indicate, but it is best practice because other drivers might not have noticed that the lane is merging (i.e. the road is narrowing) and therefore may not be expecting you to move left or right.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"442\" height=\"600\" src=\"https:\/\/www.drivingtests.co.nz\/resources\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/09\/two-lanes-merge-urban-area-442x600.jpg\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-19624\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.drivingtests.co.nz\/resources\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/09\/two-lanes-merge-urban-area-442x600.jpg 442w, https:\/\/www.drivingtests.co.nz\/resources\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/09\/two-lanes-merge-urban-area-221x300.jpg 221w, https:\/\/www.drivingtests.co.nz\/resources\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/09\/two-lanes-merge-urban-area.jpg 470w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 442px) 100vw, 442px\" \/><figcaption>In an urban area, it&#8217;s common for two lanes to merge into one. Neither lane officially ends, but it&#8217;s best practice to indicate. However, if one lane goes straight ahead and the other terminates, only traffic in the lane that is terminating needs to indicate, and that traffic must give way to traffic in the lane not terminating.<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"517\" height=\"600\" src=\"https:\/\/www.drivingtests.co.nz\/resources\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/09\/overtaking-lane-ends-517x600.jpg\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-19625\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.drivingtests.co.nz\/resources\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/09\/overtaking-lane-ends-517x600.jpg 517w, https:\/\/www.drivingtests.co.nz\/resources\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/09\/overtaking-lane-ends-259x300.jpg 259w, https:\/\/www.drivingtests.co.nz\/resources\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/09\/overtaking-lane-ends.jpg 576w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 517px) 100vw, 517px\" \/><figcaption>When a passing lane ends, it&#8217;s best practice to signal. This is especially important for large vehicles travelling in the left lane as they may be obscuring lane-end signs for motorists overtaking.<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Merge &#8216;like a zip&#8217;, i.e. vehicles merging should slot alternately between vehicles already in the target lane (assuming traffic is heavy enough to warrant it. You should be using the feeder lane to get up to the same speed as traffic in your target lane.
