If it&#8217;s on the tractor unit it&#8217;s often called a pusher axle while if it&#8217;s on a trailer it&#8217;s often called a tag axle. Retractable axles are sometimes called dead axles, lift axles, cheater axles or drop axles. For single instances of these axles, the maximum weight a truck can carry on each axle is:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Single (S) (i.e. two tyres per axle): 6000kg<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Super-single (SL): 7200kg<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Mega-single (SM): 7600kg<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Dual or twin (T) (i.e. four tyres per axle): 8200kg<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p>If you put more than one axle together (e.g. a tandem axle), it&#8217;s not necessarily twice the weight of the single axles.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.drivingtests.co.nz\/resources\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/07\/tandem-axle-set-344x600.jpg\" alt=\"\"\/><figcaption class=\"wp-element-caption\">Lots of combinations of axle weights<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>Trucks carrying a heavy load must spread out that load over the road surface to stay within the safe operating limits of the tyres and to reduce the amount of <a href=\"https:\/\/streets.mn\/2016\/07\/07\/chart-of-the-day-vehicle-weight-vs-road-damage-levels\/\">damage caused to the road surface<\/a>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>However, any tyres that are touching the road create <a href=\"https:\/\/www.drivingtests.co.nz\/resources\/truck-driver-fuel-economy-tips\/\">rolling resistance<\/a> which uses extra fuel, and it wears the tyre out. The three rear tyres on a tri-axle semitrailer <a href=\"http:\/\/www.nvfnorden.org\/lisalib\/getfile.aspx?itemid=3161\">create about 57% of the rolling resistance<\/a>. As rolling resistances contribute about 15% of the total fuel costs (depending on the type of driving), lifting one of those axles could save 2-3% in fuel costs. Therefore when not carrying a load, it makes sense to try to reduce the number of axles with tyres touching the road surface. You can often see this with empty logging trailers stacked on top of one another.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"600\" height=\"462\" src=\"https:\/\/www.drivingtests.co.nz\/resources\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/10\/logging-trailer-being-carried-on-truck-600x462.jpg\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-20287\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.drivingtests.co.nz\/resources\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/10\/logging-trailer-being-carried-on-truck-600x462.jpg 600w, https:\/\/www.drivingtests.co.nz\/resources\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/10\/logging-trailer-being-carried-on-truck-300x231.jpg 300w, https:\/\/www.drivingtests.co.nz\/resources\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/10\/logging-trailer-being-carried-on-truck-768x591.jpg 768w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 600px) 100vw, 600px\" \/><figcaption class=\"wp-element-caption\">As the truck is unladen and the skeletal full trailer only weighs perhaps 4000kg, it can be carried on the truck to reduce tyre wear.<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>Additionally, the more axles you have, the more they scrub sideways around corners. Section 3.11 of the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.nzta.govt.nz\/resources\/rules\/vehicle-dimensions-and-mass-2016\/#s3-11\">Land Transport Rule Vehicle Dimensions and Mass 2016<\/a> explains retractable axles:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<blockquote class=\"wp-block-quote is-layout-flow wp-block-quote-is-layout-flow\">\n<p>A heavy motor vehicle, other than an A-train or a B-train, may have a retractable axle if<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>(a)\u2003the retractable axle is either\u2014<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>(i)\u2003a drive axle; or<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>(ii)\u2003in a rear axle set; and<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>(b)\u2003the retractable axle has an automated control that ensures the remaining axle or axles and axle set or axle sets in contact with the ground remain within the mass limits in&nbsp;<em>Schedule 3<\/em>&nbsp;and within all manufacturer\u2019s component ratings for all retracted axle configurations; and<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>(c)\u2003the forward-distance requirements and rear overhang requirements in&nbsp;<em>Schedule 2<\/em>&nbsp;are complied with, whether the axle is in contact with the road or is in a retracted position; and<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>(d)\u2003the retractable axle is certified for compliance with this clause by a vehicle inspector or inspecting organisation; and<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>(e)\u2003the vehicle meets all applicable requirements in the&nbsp;<em>Road User Charges Act 2012<\/em>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>(e)\u2003the vehicle meets all applicable requirements in the&nbsp;<em>Road User Charges Act 2012<\/em>.<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"600\" height=\"345\" src=\"https:\/\/www.drivingtests.co.nz\/resources\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/10\/tanker-truck-with-lift-axle-600x345.jpg\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-20357\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.drivingtests.co.nz\/resources\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/10\/tanker-truck-with-lift-axle-600x345.jpg 600w, https:\/\/www.drivingtests.co.nz\/resources\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/10\/tanker-truck-with-lift-axle-300x173.jpg 300w, https:\/\/www.drivingtests.co.nz\/resources\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/10\/tanker-truck-with-lift-axle-768x442.jpg 768w, https:\/\/www.drivingtests.co.nz\/resources\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/10\/tanker-truck-with-lift-axle.jpg 1920w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 600px) 100vw, 600px\" \/><figcaption class=\"wp-element-caption\">This American tanker truck has a lift axle ahead of the main axle set.<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>Only unladen vehicles are permitted to operate with an axle retracted, i.e. if you are carrying a load, all available wheels must be in contact with the road surface.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>What is a retractable axle?
