It is used when battery power isn&#8217;t sufficient. PTO most commonly drives hydraulics. PTO has to be switched on in the cab to work; it doesn&#8217;t operate all the time. When engaged, the engine revs will rise from idle as power is supplied to the attachment. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Within the truck, there will be a switch to activate PTO and either a dial to increase or decrease the engine revs (i.e. to provide more or less power), a remote control or it will automatically adjust the engine&#8217;s revs to give the required power.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-large\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"600\" height=\"338\" src=\"https:\/\/www.drivingtests.co.nz\/resources\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/03\/traffic-management-truck-600x338.jpg\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-22648\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.drivingtests.co.nz\/resources\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/03\/traffic-management-truck-600x338.jpg 600w, https:\/\/www.drivingtests.co.nz\/resources\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/03\/traffic-management-truck-300x169.jpg 300w, https:\/\/www.drivingtests.co.nz\/resources\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/03\/traffic-management-truck-768x433.jpg 768w, https:\/\/www.drivingtests.co.nz\/resources\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/03\/traffic-management-truck-1536x865.jpg 1536w, https:\/\/www.drivingtests.co.nz\/resources\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/03\/traffic-management-truck-2048x1154.jpg 2048w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 600px) 100vw, 600px\" \/><figcaption>A traffic management truck with several vehicles behind it with knuckle boom cranes, all of which use PTO to power attachments.<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">When is PTO not used?<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">While PTO is excellent for providing a large amount of power to hydraulic cylinders and other machinery, it has some disadvantages, most noticeably that it is noisy due to the engine continually running and it creates <a href=\"https:\/\/phys.org\/news\/2019-02-pollution-deaths-linked-diesel.html\">diesel fumes which are a pollutant<\/a>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Some equipment doesn&#8217;t need PTO. For example, you might be rolling forwards with the PTO engaged in your tipper as you raise the bin to allow aggregate to tip from the rear. Tractors often have implements that are powered by PTO. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">However, high-speed driving will stress the pump leading to either a failure in the seals or for the pump itself to overheat. If it overheats, internal bits can break off and then your whole hydraulic system will need to be flushed, as well as the pump replaced.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Trucks often have attachments or features that need power to operate.
