More pedestrian crossings are being constructed where a cycle lane also exists. Who has the right of way? <\/p>\n\n\n\n

There are two scenarios:<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The cycle lane is part of the roadway. Cyclists give way to pedestrians, but are still travelling in the same direction as vehicles<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n\n\n\n

The cycle lane is separated from the roadway and can use the crossing. Cyclists must give way to pedestrians, and cars must give way to cyclists crossing the road on the green cycle path.<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n\n\n\n

There’s currently no legislation to define the right of way of cyclists crossing in this manner (it was written before cycling lanes were a thing).<\/p>\n\n\n\n

In the meantime, while the legislation isn’t explicit about the rule, an additional sign reading ‘To cyclists and pedestrians’ is added for motor vehicle drivers. Drivers can then apply the normal pedestrian crossing give way rules<\/a>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
