They are used by a driver transporting dangerous goods. The dangerous goods are loaded into them and secured in the back of the truck.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-large\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"300\" height=\"251\" src=\"https:\/\/www.drivingtests.co.nz\/resources\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/05\/segregation-device.png\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-23819\"\/><figcaption>An example segregation box from <a href=\"http:\/\/www.hazguard.com.au\/our-products\/segregation-device-type-i\/\">Hazguard<\/a>.  You can see the space for the DG placard\/label, channels for forklift forks and for passing strops through for load security.<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>The legal definition for a segregation device and taken from the Land Transport Rule 2005 is:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><em>containers that comply with the specified performance standards and are used to provide an additional level of protection and containment of packages complying with section 3.<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Section 3 of the Land Transport Rule 2005 specifies if different products can go with each other in the same vehicle or not. There are three parts that must be adhered to:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ol class=\"wp-block-list\"><li>the product must not be loaded in the same freight container or on the same vehicle, <\/li><li>the product can be loaded in the same freight container or same vehicle provided that it is separated by at least three metres; or<\/li><li>the product can be loaded in the same freight container or on the same vehicle if it is transported in a segregation device.<\/li><\/ol>\n\n\n\n<p>Segregation devices come in different types and sizes, depending on what quantity of dangerous goods you need to segregate. The devices must be securely restrained within the vehicle. If you need to understand load security, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.drivingtests.co.nz\/course\/truck-load-security\/\">this course<\/a> explains everything.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>Standards for segregation device<\/strong>s<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>There are\nspecifications that must be met before a container can be an approved\nrecognised segregation device. Suffice to say, that a cardboard box with the\nword \u201csegregation device\u201d handwritten on the side would fall far from the\nrequired standards. In some cases, it depends on the product being carried.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The devices\nmust:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\"><li>meet\nspecifications, and be type tested, certified and marked in accordance with\nNZS5433; or<\/li><li>be\napproved by the relevant regulatory authority; or<\/li><li>if\nfor Class 6.2 Infectious Substances, meet the requirements detailed in the Land\nTransport Rule Dangerous Goods 2005.<\/li><\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p>They may be\nused to segregate:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\"><li>incompatible\ndangerous goods of Classes 3,4,5,6 and 8 from each other or from food items;\nand<\/li><li>dangerous\ngoods of Class 9 when the nature of the goods requires them to be segregated\nfrom Classes 3,4,5,6 or 8 or from food items.<\/li><\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p>With the exception of those used for diagnostic specimens and biological products, the segregation devices must comply with the following:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\"><li>they\nmust not be used to segregate any dangerous goods of Packing Group 1; and<\/li><li>packages\nof dangerous goods that require venting or pressure relief must be packed in\nappropriately designed devices; and<\/li><li>they\nmust be labelled to indicate the class and division of dangerous goods they\ncontain; and<\/li><li>all\npackages loaded into a device must comply with packaging and labelling\nrequirements and be secured in the device; and<\/li><li>the\ndevices must be secured in the vehicle or freight container to comply with all\nload restraint requirements; and<\/li><li>before\nthey are used for a different class or division from their previous use they\nmust be inspected and, if necessary, cleaned to remove any incompatible\nresidue, except as specified in the Rule 6.4 (4) (b)<\/li><li>a\ndevice used for food items must not be used to transport any class or division\nof dangerous goods; and<\/li><li>food\nitems must never be packed in a device that has been used to transport\ndangerous goods of any class or division or any other product that might\ncontaminate food items; and<\/li><li>incompatible\npackages in the same freight container or vehicle must be loaded so that all\nbut one class or division or food items are in separate segregation devices;\nand<\/li><li>any\nclass, division or food item not loaded in a segregation device that is\nincompatible with those that are, must be raised off the floor of the freight container\nor vehicle by at least 100mm; and<\/li><li>a\nvehicle on which segregation devices are used to segregate goods of classes 3,4\nor 5 must carry an engineers certificate to show that it complies with\nconstruction and load anchorage point requirements; and<\/li><li>documentation\nmust be carried to show that a segregation device has been approved for the\nclass or division of dangerous goods for which it is used unless the device\ncarries approval markings.<\/li><\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p>You can learn more about segregation and how to do it by completing a <a href=\"https:\/\/www.drivingtests.co.nz\/course\/dangerous-goods-d-endorsement\/\">dangerous goods D endorsement course<\/a>.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>What is a segregation device?
