{"id":29156,"date":"2021-11-02T11:40:08","date_gmt":"2021-11-01T22:40:08","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.drivingtests.co.nz\/resources\/?p=29156"},"modified":"2021-11-02T11:40:08","modified_gmt":"2021-11-01T22:40:08","slug":"how-truck-drivers-damage-trailer-drawbars-and-couplings","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.drivingtests.co.nz\/resources\/how-truck-drivers-damage-trailer-drawbars-and-couplings\/","title":{"rendered":"How truck drivers damage trailer drawbars and couplings"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">A <a href=\"https:\/\/www.drivingtests.co.nz\/resources\/what-is-a-full-trailer\/\" data-type=\"post\" data-id=\"28704\">full trailer<\/a> differs from a semitrailer in that it has an A-frame drawbar attached to a dolly at the front of the trailer, rather than a kingpin and skidplate.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Full trailers (also called pull trailers) are coupled using a bolt and pin coupling on the rear of the truck whereby a pin drops through a towing eye on the drawbar trailer. Backing into this too quickly or at the wrong angle can cause damage, as can manoeuvring outside of the range of motion of the coupling, or not maintaining the parts.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Drivers must know <a href=\"https:\/\/www.drivingtests.co.nz\/course\/trailer-coupling\/\">how to couple the trailer<\/a>, as well as how to do manoeuvres like jackknifing (if relevant).<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Damage to cables, air lines and connectors<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">When a trailer is parked, the cables should be draped over the drawbar, inserted into dummy sockets (if available) or tied or clipped under the drawbar. The air lines are on the ground. Fortunately the EBS and the hydraulic line are not in the gravel. The drawbar leg seems to have slumped slightly, meaning the towing eye might not be at the right height when recoupling. This is accelerated if you try to use a 50mm towing eye with a 40mm pin because it moves around a lot.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The towing eye can also be stretched if shock-loaded by dumping the clutch with a heavy load.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">How to avoid damaging a drawbar coupling<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<ol class=\"wp-block-list\"><li>Make sure the pin is up before reversing in<\/li><li>Make sure the towing eye lines up with the funnel<\/li><li>Reverse towards the drawbar slowly<\/li><li>Keep cables and air lines off the ground and out of the way when coupling<\/li><li>Don&#8217;t over-extend the trailer coupling while jackknifing the trailer<\/li><li>Don&#8217;t shock-load the coupling<\/li><li>Maintain the coupling<\/li><li>Don&#8217;t use a 50mm towing eye with a 40mm pin<\/li><\/ol>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>A full trailer differs from a semitrailer in that it has an A-frame drawbar attached to a dolly at the front of the trailer, rather than a kingpin and skidplate.
