{"id":35587,"date":"2024-11-06T15:34:25","date_gmt":"2024-11-06T02:34:25","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.drivingtests.co.nz\/resources\/?p=35587"},"modified":"2024-12-30T21:34:06","modified_gmt":"2024-12-30T08:34:06","slug":"what-must-supervisors-of-forklift-operators-know","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.drivingtests.co.nz\/resources\/what-must-supervisors-of-forklift-operators-know\/","title":{"rendered":"What must supervisors of forklift operators know?"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">If you&#8217;re a supervisor of forklift operators, you have obligations under the Health and Safety at Work Act 2015. <strong>You can&#8217;t plead that you sent your operators to a training course off-site and use that as an excuse for poor practices in the workplace<\/strong>; you are responsible for how they operate regardless. This is part of the primary duty of care in the Act.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">So, it&#8217;s often a shock to supervisors when they are told this. If you&#8217;re a forklift supervisor and you don&#8217;t know what good forklift operation looks like, then there are options:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ol class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Do our online <a href=\"https:\/\/www.drivingtests.co.nz\/course\/forklift\/\">forklift operator&#8217;s licence<\/a> course<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Read your company&#8217;s SOPs and ensure that they are complied with<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Read the Approved Code of Practice and the Good Practice Guide.<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Once you&#8217;ve done that, you&#8217;ll know what you are looking for. Often, poor forklift driving develops over years of shortcuts and bad habits. It&#8217;s your role to break those habits and build pride and confidence within your forklift operation team.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">You can break down your duties into four categories:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ol class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Checking the forklift is safe to use<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Safe stacking and destacking<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Safe driving<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Safe shutdown<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Checking the forklift is safe to use<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The forklift should be checked daily (if it&#8217;s being used daily), or on days that it will be used. Use a pre-start checklist. One is available from our forklift operator&#8217;s certificate course. Are there processes in place so that this happens at the beginning of the shift? If not, you can create one.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Forklifts that are damaged or dangerous should be tagged out and not used until they are repaired.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Safe stacking and destacking<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Are the forklift operators careful with the goods? <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Do they bump the forklift or the load into racks or other objects? <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Are the forks all the way into the pallet?<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Are they loading evenly on each fork? <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Do they understand the load plate and the capacity of the forklift?<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Safe driving<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Do they stick to the speed limit?<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Do they use the horn when required?<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Do they look over their shoulder and not rely on the mirrors when reversing?<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Are they travelling in reverse with a load that obscures their vision forwards?<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Are the forks tilted back when travelling?<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Are they aware of other pedestrians and vehicles in the workplace, and respect give way rules?<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Do they have a current forklift operator&#8217;s certificate (forklift licence) and F endorsement (if driving on a road)?<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Are they using the inching pedal correctly?<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Are they using 3 points of contact when getting on and off the forklift?<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Do they climb on and off the forklift the correct side and the correct way?<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Do they wear the seatbelt?<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Do they drive smoothly?<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Safe shutdown<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Are they parking the forklift in a safe place that doesn&#8217;t block emergency exits?<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Are they parking the forklift with the fork tips on the ground and the wheels straight?<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Is the key removed and the handbrake on?<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Do you have a refuelling or recharging guide or a specific person that does it?<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">If you can ensure that all of the above are followed, then you&#8217;re well on your way to a safer workplace with forklifts.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>If you&#8217;re a supervisor of forklift operators, you have obligations under the Health and Safety at Work Act 2015.
