If you need to know <a href=\"https:\/\/www.drivingtests.co.nz\/course\/axle-weights-vdam-calculations-training\/\">how to calculate the maximum legal axle weights for your truck, this course will show you how<\/a>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Weight changes<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>On <a href=\"https:\/\/nzta.maps.arcgis.com\/apps\/webappviewer\/index.html?id=e824a661f4c04a75b2d6ae784e4b9e60\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">permitted roads<\/a>, the following new weights apply for HPMV:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>7-axle combinations with a minimum wheelbase of 16.8m can now be 45,000kg (up from 44,000kg)<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>8-axle combinations with a minimum wheelbase of 17.4m can now be 46,000kg (up from 44,000kg)<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Simple trailers: an additional 4000kg gross mass to approved trailers, now 40,000kg up from 36,000kg.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p>Minimum lengths ensure loads are spread out to accommodate bridge loading limits.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>There is no change to any other vehicles, and this new rule does not affect High Productivity Motor Vehicles (HPMVs).<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>You need a permit to run on roads not on the map, and you will still need a permit for some roads for a 50MAX vehicle.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Width changes<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>The maximum width (excluding mirrors, aerodynamic devices and close-proximity monitoring systems) before you need an oversized load permit is 2.55m including load securing devices (previously it was 2.5m plus load securing devices).<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>The maximum width including mirrors is 2.98m.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Aerodynamic devices can be 25mm either side.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>CPMS can be 70mm either side.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Height changes<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>The maximum height is now 4.3m including load securing devices (previously it was 4.25m plus load securing devices).<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>There are certain exceptions where technology allows the vehicle to temporarily exceed this height when raising the vehicle to clear obstacles.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Weighing tolerances<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>Tolerances have been reduced to:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>500kg for all individual axles and gross mass limits (down from 1500kg)<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>1000kg for axle sets (e.g. a tri-axle set at the rear of a semi-trailer) other than steer axles.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>There&#8217;s a proposal before Parliament to change tolerances to a percentage-based system.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Vehicle compliance and permits<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>If your vehicle was compliant and legal before the changes, it will still be compliant.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>If you have a permit issued before February 1, it&#8217;s still valid.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Desired outcomes of the changes<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Fewer vehicles on the road<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Fewer trips required<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Better efficiency<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Wider choice of vehicles for freight and bus companies<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p>If you want to get into the detail of the changes, they are explained&nbsp;<a href=\"http:\/\/www.nzta.govt.nz\/assets\/resources\/rules\/docs\/VDAM-2016-question-and-answers.pdf\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">here<\/a>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>You can read more about <a href=\"https:\/\/www.drivingtests.co.nz\/resources\/heavy-vehicle-weights-and-loads\/\">vehicle weights and mass here<\/a>.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>This is the essence of the new Vehicle Dimensions and Mass 2016 rule and it saves you reading the whole document: It replaces the 2002 VDAM rule and came into effect on 1 February 2017.
