Heavy vehicle tests

You must learn the class-specific questions as well as the general road rules, so don't just practice class 2 or class 3-5, work through all sections or take random tests. Selecting the class 2 button below means you won't be asked any class 3-5 questions, and vice versa.

The question modules cover the Road Code knowledge you need to know to take either a class 2 or class 3-5 theory test for heavy vehicles. Take the mock tests until you're getting 100% every time and then you're ready to take the real test.

For a truck licence you will need to choose whether you are learning for class 2 or class 3-5.

If you want to learn to drive a medium rigid vehicle you will need a class 2 licence as it will allow you to drive any rigid vehicle with a gross laden weight of between 6000-18,000kg, a combination vehicle (but not a tractor/trailer combination) with a gross combined weight of 12,000kg or less, a combination vehicle consisting of a rigid vehicle (not a tractor) with a gross laden weight of not more than 18,000kg towing a light trailer, a rigid vehicle with a gross laden weight of more than 18,000kg that has no more than two axles, or a tractor with a gross laden weight of between 6000-18,000kg if driven at a speed exceeding 30kph.

Class 3 allows you to drive medium combination vehicles which is a combination vehicle with a gross combination weight of between 12,000-25,000kg

Class 4 is a heavy rigid vehicle with a gross laden weight of more than 18,000kg or a combination vehicle consisting of a rigid vehicle with a gross laden weight of more than 18,000kg towing a light trailer. You can drive vehicles in class 1 and 2, but not class 3.

Class 5 is a heavy combination vehicle with a gross combined weight of more than 25,000kg. You can also drive vehicles in class 1, 2, 3 and 4.

If you're learning the NZ road code in order to take the theory test to get your learner licence, this website works on your computer, tablet or smartphone. Bookmark it on your smartphone and you can take the quizzes just before you go in to take the actual driving theory test and the knowledge will be fresh in your short-term memory, too.
