Understand best-practice crane operation, and how to rig and sling loads for safe lifting and moving
This comprehensive course for gantry, overhead or bridge cranes delivers essential knowledge and practical guidance for operators who want to maintain and enhance their skills in safely operating cranes.
After completing this gantry crane course, you'll be able to:
By the end of the course, you'll feel more confident in your ability to operate your crane safely and efficiently, handle difficult loads, and deal with any problems that come up during your shift.
This course is suitable for overhead/bridge and gantry crane operators of all experience levels. You'll see real examples of common problems and how to handle them, plus get practical tips from experienced operators who've dealt with challenging situations.
It's also important that supervisors understand the content of the course.
Practical training is putting theory into practice. You can't bake a cake without knowing the ingredients, and you can't operate a gantry crane safely unless you know how to assess the load, sling it and operate the crane. There are many nuances to operating a gantry crane and even people who have used one for 20 years will find something new in this course. Plus, it refreshes your knowledge of things you may have forgotten. Practical supervision is done at the end in line with the best practices; you get to put your knowledge into action.
The course content aligns with New Zealand's Approved Code of Practice for Load-Lifting Rigging, the Approved Code of Practice for Cranes, and current WorkSafe guidelines. It was developed in consultation with industry experts and incorporates established best practices.
Gantry crane is the catch-all term, but it specifically refers to a crane supported on two legs that are on rails. Overhead or bridge cranes are supported on runways attached to the building. But they're all usually called gantry cranes.

Regular refresher training is crucial for maintaining safe operating practices and staying current with evolving industry standards. This course helps prevent complacency and reinforces critical safety concepts.
The Approved Code of Practice for Cranes says that you must hold unit standard 3800 for pendant or remote-controlled cranes. However, the Health and Safety at Work Act 2015 says that you can follow the Code or do it a better way. Therefore, while unit standards are strongly suggested, they are not a legal requirement. If you can demonstrate that your training options are equivalent or better, then you can choose training that is not unit standard-based. There are many reasons why online training plus a practical assessment in-house is a preferable option to training with a trainer.

With a cab-controlled or cab-operated gantry crane, the operator sits in a cab, usually attached to one of the legs or the end of the bridge. The controls are different to the pendant or remote-controlled gantry cranes (usually two or three joysticks and some switches for various functions).
Everything except for the actual controls within the cab is covered in this course and it can be used as a refresher. It is recommended that you have unit standard 3790 or equivalent training and that you do the practical assessment for the specific crane you use.
