Car tests

Try a random selection of questions for your car licence which covers all the Road Code sections in a mock theory test. All practice questions are multiple choice and will challenge your knowledge of the road rules.

Learning Modules

The modules contain all the Road Code questions you need to know for your car learner licence test.

  • Core: Road Code driving knowledge - following and passing rules, give way rules.
  • Behaviour: Driving courteously; dealing with challenging road conditions.
  • Parking:Parking restrictions and rules - where you can and can't park with different types of vehicles, and what the time limits are (including in loading zones)
  • Emergencies: Driving emergencies - skids, mechanical failure, accidents and obstacles; how to drive around emergency vehicles.
  • Road position: Where to position your car on the road in different situations such as overtaking and approaching intersections
  • Intersections: Reading traffic signals, stop signs and give way signs at t-intersections, crossroads, roundabouts and more
  • Theory: Warrant of fitness and registration, legal loads, and carrying passengers.
  • Signs: Including speed limits, road works, compulsory vs advisory signs, hazards and directions.

Take these practice tests until you are getting 100% all the time and then you will be ready to take the real theory test. Remember to create an account so that you can track your progress.

On a car licence you can drive most light vehicles (cars, vans and utes), ATVs (all terrain vehicles), some agricultural vehicles, motorhomes and campers (depending on the weight) and mopeds (50cc maximum). If you're travelling to New Zealand and renting a car or motorhome, be sure to familiarise yourself with the road code in the free quizzes above, particularly ones for signs and intersection rules.

If you're learning the NZ road code in order to take the theory test to get your learner licence, this website works on your computer, tablet or smartphone. Bookmark it on your smartphone and you can take the quizzes just before you go in to take the actual driving theory test and the knowledge will be fresh in your short-term memory, too.
