How to change lanes to the left

If you intend to move your vehicle from the right-hand lane to the left-hand lane check your mirrors, indicate for 3 seconds, then check over your left shoulder in your blind spot before you move.

Only change lanes if you need to. 

You should also be aware of what the traffic is doing in the left-hand lane. If you are driving in heavy traffic, vehicles in the left lane might suddenly stop and, due to the position of your steering wheel on the right-hand side of your vehicle, you might have less view of what's up ahead if there's also heavy traffic in your lane. Firstly, you will need to ensure you can stop safely, therefore you should start dropping back to a safe distance when you've pulled into the left lane.

Secondly, any vehicle that is now behind you will have less room to stop, so if traffic ahead suddenly brakes, the vehicle behind you may be unable to stop if you have only just moved into its path. It will need time to drop back, too.

Be careful if you are driving a longer vehicle or towing a trailer as you will need more room in the left-hand lane to change lanes.
