Get the Operator's Certificate and Unit Standard 10851 Operate a Powered Industrial Lift Truck (Forklift) in one simple course. It comes with the pre-paid practical and unit standard registration with NZQA (7 level 3 credits).

You'll learn everything you need to know about safe forklift operation in the workplace.

Once you have completed the online modules, you can request your in-person assessment at one of TR Driver Training's 10 branches nationwide (Auckland, Hamilton, Mt Maunganui, Hastings, New Plymouth, Palmerston North, Wellington, Blenheim, Christchurch or Dunedin) - details are in the course. Scheduling your assessment is subject to branch and trainer availability. 

We'll lodge your unit standards on successful completion of the course.

  • What are the advantages of the forklift unit standard 10851 online course?

  • FAQs

    You're a new forklift operator with no experience. Can you still do this course? Yes, the practical assessment and instruction will be performed by a trainer and even if you've never driven a forklift before, you'll be put at ease.

    Does the course cover reach trucks and other types of forklifts, or just counterbalance? The theory is the same regardless of what type of forklift truck you use. It covers the requirements of the Approved Code of Practice.

    Do you get a forklift OSH (operator's certificate), too? Yes. This will be with a Competenz-accredited assessor.

    How long is the certificate valid for? The Approved Code of Practice recommends three years.

    What's the minimum age to get US10851? 15 years.

    Do you need a driver's licence to get US10851? No

    Can you take the course in another language? You can read the questions in another language, but you must answer the questions in English. The videos are in English and the final practical assessment will be given in English.

    Is US10851 expiring? In December 2027, US10851 will be replaced by a skills standard. Until then, you can do either, but bear in mind that the unit standard offers more credits. When the unit standard expires, this does not mean that you need to do the qualification again, it's only our ability to offer the unit standard.

  • Requirements

    • You will need one course licence per person taking the course - you can't use one licence for multiple operators
    • You will need a computer, smartphone or tablet with internet access to take the theory training
    • You must take a practical assessment at a TR Driver Training branch (or your office if one of TR Driver Training's trainers goes there) at the end of this course
    • If you cannot speak or understand written English to at least IELTS level 5, you may need to provide an interpreter; please let us know when you book
