Online + practical assessment: learn essential safe techniques for crane operations

This rigging and slinging course covers the theory required to sling regular loads safely.

After completing this course, you will receive unit standard 30072 and will be able to:

  • identify hazards on the site and on the load
  • plan a lift
  • select the right slings, shackles, hooks and eyebolts
  • read certification tags and WLL tables
  • calculate sling tension at different angles,
  • apply the correct D/d ratio
  • use packing and dunnage
  • give standard hand signals, and
  • tie the four knots used in rigging work.

The course is aligned to the Approved Code of Practice for Load-lifting Rigging and the Health and Safety at Work Act 2015 (HSWA).

Once you have completed the online modules, you can request your in-person assessment at one of TR Driver Training's 10 branches nationwide (Auckland, Hamilton, Mt Maunganui, Hastings, New Plymouth, Palmerston North, Wellington, Blenheim, Christchurch or Dunedin) - details are in the course. Scheduling your assessment is subject to branch and trainer availability.

    You're a new crane operator with no experience. Can you still do this course? Yes, the practical assessment and instruction will be performed by a trainer and even if you've never done this before, you'll be put at ease.

    What's the minimum age to get US30072? 15 years.

    Do you need any other unit standards to get 30072? No

    Can you take the course in another language? You can read the questions in another language, but you must answer the questions in English. The videos are in English and the final practical assessment will be given in English.

    Is US30072 expiring? In December 2027, US30072 may be replaced by a skills standard. When the unit standard expires, this does not mean that you need to do the qualification again, it's only our ability to offer the unit standard.

    Can you use this course as a refresher? Yes

  • Requirements

    • You will need one course licence per person taking the course - you can't use one licence for multiple trainees
    • You will need a computer, smartphone or tablet with internet access to take the theory training
    • You must take a practical assessment at a TR Driver Training branch (or your office if one of TR Driver Training's trainers goes there) at the end of this course
    • If you cannot speak or understand written English to at least IELTS level 5, you may need to provide an interpreter; please let us know when you book
