You'll get both your Operator's Certificate (OSH certificate or forklift licence) and an F endorsement on your driver's licence, and we'll register unit standard 18496 for you, too.
This course contains easy-to-follow video content followed by questions to assess your understanding of the course material. It covers everything you need to know in the Approved Code of Practice.
The course licence can be purchased by an individual or by a company for its operators.
Once you have completed the online modules, fill out this form to request your in-person assessment at one of TR Driver Training's 10 branches nationwide (Auckland, Hamilton, Mt Maunganui, Hastings, New Plymouth, Palmerston North, Wellington, Blenheim, Christchurch or Dunedin). Scheduling your assessment is subject to branch and trainer availability.
"The quality of the course was excellent and I now know everything I should know. I particularly liked the videos showing how things are done and not done." Lisa Te Huia, BOP Brewery Ltd
Where is the course held? The theory is done online (anywhere you have internet access). The practical assessment is done at one of TR Driver Training's 10 branches nationwide.
I have a new forklift operator who hasn't driven a forklift before. Can they use this course to become qualified? Yes, but bear in mind that you should provide them with supervision and training for your specific forklift and hazards.
Does the course cover reach trucks and other types of forklifts, or just counterbalance? The theory is the same regardless of what type of forklift truck you use. The only difference is that you must provide specific practical induction and training on each piece of equipment that your operators use. This can be done internally, by the manufacturer/distributor, or by an external trainer. The same applies to using attachments.
How long is the certificate valid for? The Approved Code of Practice recommends three years. You are free to change this to be more frequent, e.g. two years, but you should not make it longer than three years as this will provide a worse health and safety outcome therefore would not comply with the HSWA2015. The F endorsement stays on a car licence for as long as the licence is valid - it doesn't need to be renewed
Do I have to do NZQA unit standards? Not for the operator's certificate but the F endorsement course comes with US18496.
How do I get the F endorsement on my licence? You must hold a full New Zealand Class 1 (car) licence. Please bring it with you to the assessment. Once you have finished and passed the theory and practical assessment with TR Driver Training you can apply at VTNZ or AA to have the F endorsement added to your New Zealand full driver licence. VTNZ/AA charge separately for this (the cost is not included in the course fee)
You get access to the course for a full 6 months which means your operator can take a couple of months to finish the modules and can come back to it as a refresher anytime until the course access expires - this is great if you need to do any remedial work with them.
Set up is free whether you are purchasing one course licence or a hundred course licences.
