Slinging Loads (Dogman) Refresher

Based on slinging and dogman unit standards

This course is for riggers, dogmen, crane operators, stevedores, supervisors and others that work around cranes. It can be used as a refresher for the optional unit standards 30072 and 3789, and skill standards 40829 and 40830.

If you don't require a unit standard pathway, you can use this course as a foundation course for learning how to choose rigging and slinging equipment, rig and sling regular and irregular loads, create lift plans, communicate with crane operators, and assess work site hazards when lifting.

If you need 30072, please view our US30072 Slinging Regular Loads Safely course.

It will ensure that you're up to date with industry best practice and the skills required to safely complete a lift, whether you are the crane operator or the dogman.

It comes with an optional assessment checklist that can be conducted in your workplace by a nominated person, such as a supervisor.

The course aligns with the Approved Code of Practice for Cranes, the Health and Safety at Work Act 2015, the Health and Safety at Work (General Risk and Workplace Management) Regulations 2016, and industry good practice guidelines.

The course comes with optional modules that can be disabled when not relevant for your workplace.

  • What is the difference between a refresher and a unit standard dogman course?

Unit standards are optional qualifications. It's common for dogmen to hold US30072 and US3789, or skills standards 40829 and 40830. None are legally required to work in the industry, though. Once you have the unit standards, you do not need to do a unit standard course again, only a refresher. This course functions as a refresher course.

If you choose not to do unit standards, you can use this course as a foundation course while working under the supervision of an experienced dogman or crane operator.

  • How often should slinging or dogman training be refreshed?

It's industry best practice to refresh training for higher-risk activities at least every 3 years, and often every 2 years. This slinging course writes a 3-year training record that will remind you when you need to do it again.

  • What will I learn on this slinging and dogman course?

A full module list is below with a description of the contents. The main topics are:

    • Selecting appropriate slinging equipment
    • Assessing worksite risks and controlling hazards
    • Creating a lift plan
    • Slinging loads in various configurations, such as basket, choker and multi-leg
    • Directing and communicating with a crane operator
    • Safely removing slinging equipment and closing down the job with the correct documentation and checks
  • Who should do this slinging and dogman course?

    • Crane operators for pendant- and remote controlled gantry cranes, truck loader cranes and mobile cranes
    • Dogmen (those directing the crane operator)
    • Riggers and stevedores (those securing the load and connecting it to the crane hook)
    • Site supervisors (those needing an understanding of best practice to ensure team members are working safely).

Other workers in industries where cranes are used (ports, transport, engineering, manufacturing, construction, and civil infrastructure) will find this course useful, and it will open up job opportunities.

  • Can a slinging or dogman qualification expire (and what happens)?

Technically, no. The refresher requirement is based on industry best practice and compliance with the Health and Safety at Work (General Risk and Workplace Management) Regulations 2016. A PCBU is legally required to provide regular training and information to ensure that workers are competent. So, while there's only a suggested expiry date, it would be difficult to justify to WorkSafe that a PCBU had met these requirements without some form of refresher training.

So, if you are seeing other training companies saying that you need to do a full course if you've gone over 3 years since you last had training, this is them price gouging you. You can do this course and be considered to have received appropriate training.

  • Can a supervisor or other worker legally assess a trainee after doing this slinging and dogman course?

Yes. Under the Health and Safety at Work Act 2015, the PCBU is always responsible for ensuring that workers are capable of safely conducting operations. Without the knowledge to do a practical assessment, a supervisor could be inadequately prepared if things go wrong. Our course also teaches the supervisor what to look out for. They conduct a practical assessment based on our supplied checklist.

If a PCBU chooses to send trainees to a training company, this does not remove the responsibility, which is why it's a better option under the HSWA to assess internally.

  • Can you do slinging and dogman training online?

Yes. Many people prefer online learning:

    • flexibility (take a module at a time, or do the whole thing in one go)
    • ability to go back and refresh your knowledge of any of the modules at any time
    • access for 6 months
    • consistency of delivery
    • multi-lingual support
    • price (it's more cost-efficient because you're not paying for the classroom).

The theory part of this course is delivered using videos that show best practices. You'll answer questions after each video.

There's an optional practical assessment and verification if you want the ID card.

  • Do you get a slinging or dogman certificate and ID card?

Yes. If you finish the theory, you get a theory certificate that you can download as a PDF. If you do a practical assessment and it is validated on our website, it will issue an operator's certificate and ID card. You can store the ID card to Google Wallet or Apple Wallet.

  • Is it important to do dogman and slinging refresher training?

Yes. Skills can fade over time. Critical safety aspects get forgotten or misremembered. Bad habits become accidentally ingrained.

Retraining is standard in the industry and good riggers know that there's always more to learn.

It's also important that a PCBU maintains a record of training and retraining so it complies with health and safety requirements.
